For decades, the rise and fall of many record labels has been well documented in the history books of the music industry. The meteoric rise of many record labels were sometimes followed by a relatively short-lived success, which eventually culminated in the imminent demise of the label, brought upon by the fickle preferences of the generation or the end of a genre's golden era. More often than not, those that managed to survive the exodus, had to switch the direction of the label to cater to the mainstream tastes, in order to keep the label financially afloat. These actions were often met with the disappointment (and sometimes fury) of their loyal fans. However, not all labels followed these trends or templates.
Come September 2010, London-based independent record label, Ninja Tune will be celebrating its 20th anniversary. Many artistes such as Roots Manuva, Mr Scruff, The Cinematic Orchestra, The Herbaliser, Bonobo, Kid Koala and The Bug have recorded, released and flourished, under the Ninja Tune flag. In its illustrious history, (successful)sub-labels Ntone, Big Dada and Counter Records were set up to explore the fields of experimental electronic music, experimental hip-hop and rock.
To celebrate their 20th anniversary, Ninja Tune will be releasing a limited edition box set titled 'Ninja Tune XX'. The box set features many new and exclusive tracks from the stable of Ninja Tune artistes compiled into 6 CDs and 6 7-inch vinyls. The box set also includes 2 posters, 20 stickers and the hardcover edition of "Ninja Tune: 20 Years of Beats and Pieces". In addition to the release of the box set, Ninja Tune will be putting up one track per week for download, as a teaser to the lead up of its anniversary on 20th September 2010.
We have already pre-ordered our box sets to satiate our vinyl junkie habits and we are already suffering from the agony of waiting till September but yeah, we know it will definitely be worth the wait. = )
Do check out Ninja Tune XX for more information on the box set and also, to get your free downloads of the tracks. Enjoy!
