Well, I have been pretty busy lately and this post has been long overdue.
Last Saturday, I had the honour of playing for the Fuyo Interschool 2010, alongside DJs Ruxta and Koflow. I had never played for a b-boy battle, so naturally, I was a lil excited and nervous. Other than some technical glitches in the beginning, everything else was great. I was extremely impressed by the b-boys and b-girls who participated. With the exception of one team from a university, the rest of the b-boys and b-girls were all below the age of 20. Despite their age, their moves were executed with deadly precision, style and their flow was sick. It just goes to show, it is not about age but the amount of passion, determination, discipline, blood, sweat and tears that you put, in mastering your craft. If they keep it up this way, with the right mentality, I reckon they will go far.
On the other hand, I truly enjoyed playing for the b-boys and b-girls. You see, I used to play for a couple of club gigs here and there, but after awhile, I got extremely bored with it. More often than not, most of the club gigs that you get here, especially the big clubs, the crowd just wanna hear the DJ playing all that bullshit Top 40 and MTV crap. The irony is, they do not actually give a fark about the music, they just want some of that bullshit to get drunk, laid, high or front. Although, I must make it a point to say that, you can actually get drunk and high on even BETTER music and it is way better too.
The point is, they just want commercial and they do not appreciate the underground at all. There was none of that when I was playing alongside DJs Koflow and Ruxta, for the battle. It was pure funk and soul, James Brown, Bobby Byrd, The Lefties Soul Connection, Sound Stylistics, Curtis Mayfield, Reginald Milton etc. There was none of that whole 50 Cent, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Kanye West crap. Just real music. The most important thing was that, the crowd truly understood and appreciated the music. To me, that is all I need to be satisfied. When the funk starts playing, the people were all grooving.
All in all, I never had this much fun playing for a gig in a long while and having said that, playing for b-boy battles are extremely addictive. I crave for more opportunities to play and it would be an honour to drop beats for the b-boys and b-girls again. Sweeet. = )
