The Value of Money

I was reading an article in the newspapers the other day. Halfway through the article itself, I started cursing and swearing like the closet sailor I am. The article was about the wealthy in China and their misdeeds.

What really irked me was an incident where a 20 year old, from a wealthy family, and his friends were street racing in their expensive high performance cars. His foolish act caused the death of a 23 year old university student, who came from a rural farming village. The worst part of it all was, while waiting for the police to take them back for further questioning and for the ambulance to arrive, these bastards stood there joking, laughing and smoking, while the victim laid there. They showed not even an inch of remorse. Simple reason: My family is wealthy and my parents will get me out of this all. Bull, complete bull shit.

We live in a world where capitalism and materialism is everywhere (even in a Communist/Socialist system) and the rich-poor economic disparity is widening. Simply put, the rich are getting richer while the poor are getting poorer. At times, the country's government policies are responsible for creating this widening gap. After all, in a world like this, it is common for many to say: To each his own.

It is sad to see that people put their own material 'well-being' above everything else, even to the extent of valuing a Louis Vuitton bag more than the welfare of another human being. People are afraid of losing their money and material wealth to the point of obsession, without realising that by doing so, they lose their morality and humanity. It is no different from selling your soul to the Devil.

I look around at the people in society and I wonder, how much lower would society go before the depravity ends? Or, would it even stop at all for that matter? All I know is, if we continue with all this crap, sooner or later, we will just do ourselves in.
