This is one of my favourite compositions by French Impressionist composer, Joseph-Maurice Ravel. The title, 'Pavane Pour Une Infante Défunte', translates as 'Pavane For A Dead Princess'. A pavane is a slow processional dance that was common in 16th century Europe.
Just some additional information. To many people, the term 'Impressionist' is often synonymous with the visual art, which boasts many famous artists such as Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. The Impressionist movement in music, is similar to that of the visual art and it emphasises on suggestion and atmosphere, rather than strong emotions or the depiction of a story. However, Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy, who are considered two of the greatest Impressionist composers, resented that term, as they had felt that the term was reserved exclusively for painting.
