The Legendary Roots Crew, what more can I say about them that has not already been said? They are touted as the 'most underrated' band in music history. About two years ago, when they came down for the Mosaic Music Festival, a local news channel interviewed (one of the craziest, illest drummers ever) ?uestlove (Questlove) and asked him why were The Roots the 'most underrated' band. ?uestlove's answer: 'That is because we didn't get pregnant or got shot nine times in the face. The media loves the controversial stuff and we are just not exciting enough, that's why'. Sweet stuff.
I managed to catch them 'live' when they came down and the whole performance was awesome, as they got down to doing track after track, non-stop. What really impressed me most about The Roots, besides their music and lyrical content, was their attitude. You see, we often hear of bands who let success get to their heads and forget that the fans were the reason why they are, where they are. They often turn up late, put up a half-arse performance and end the performance early. The Roots, however, did no such thing. Not only did they turn up 15 minutes early to warm-up, they started the show about 5 minutes earlier AND ended the show 15 minutes later than what was intended. Even after that, they hung around the stage to accommodate the requests of fans for photos and autographs. Respect.
Through their music, they educate the listeners about what hip-hop really is about, while taking potshots at the 'clones' and 'desperados'. They practice what they preach which is why, they are, without a doubt, The Legendary Roots Crew.
