The hip hop group, Black Star, is made up of Talib Kweli and Mos Def, under the independent record label, Rawkus Records. Their tracks often had elements of anti-violence, and all the more so, following the violent deaths of Tupac Shakur and Biggie. In an interview recently, Talib Kweli revealed that the name 'Black Star' had came about as Mos Def was reading up on astronomy then. Coincidentally, the president of the Black Star Line, Marcus Garvey, was a hero to both Talib Kweli and Mos Def, so eventually they decided to take on that name for the group.
Even though, Black Star released only one album, their influences were widespread in the hip hop community and in the days after Black Star, both Talib Kweli and Mos Def are still actively involved in community projects.
