Football & Charity

As December arrives, so does the holiday season and the spirit of giving. It is a known fact that football (or what is know to Americans as soccer) has been getting a lot of bad rap, especially with all that money involved in it nowadays. We often hear of bad behaviour, on and off pitch, anything from sex scandals to footballers getting into trouble with the law. Let's face it, they are human after all and we all make mistakes but with that kinda spotlight they are in (many kids look up to them as role models), and their astronomical wages, it seems that they are no more than spoilt celebrities with a whole lotta moolah to spend.

However, this is not about criticising what is bad about them and all, in fact, I got to know about how certain football clubs and their players have been actively involved in charity for their community. One video which I managed to watch today, proves that, even though there are a a number of bad apples in the football scene, it does not mean that each and everyone of them are the same.

Yes, I know. Your eyes are not playing tricks on you. Those are Bacary Sagna, Andrei Arshavin, Cesc Fabregas and Theo Walcott, all dressed up in cute and furry mascot suits. This is part of Arsenal Football Club's community programme, "Be A Gooner, Be A Giver". The football club's charity of the season is the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity. So football rivalries all aside, this is for a greater cause and that is commendable on their part. So even if you are not a fan but wish to donate to the cause, more information can be found on the website, Be A Gooner, Be A Giver.
