I have always liked the rustic feel of certain things in life, be it buildings, music, culture, food etc. I was on the bus the other day and the bus passed by a couple of older buildings. I always get a warm fuzzy feeling everytime I see buildings like that. Then I remembered reading letters from 'concerned members of the public' to the newspaper forum.
In a nutshell, these letters were about how these 'old and unsightly' buildings are an eyesore and stick out like a sore thumb, in contrast to all the neighbouring 'new and beautiful' shopping malls. These 'concerned members of the public' or as I would call them, the 'elitist, pro-new, capitalists', then went on to suggest that the old buildings should be demolished to make make way for 'prettier' skyscrapers. My mental response to that: Bull, period.
You see, that is the mentality of many in our society nowadays. Some call it the capitalist mentality. People get so caught up with money, luxury brands and all things new. To them, new good; old bad. Everything has to be the most expensive, the latest, the flashiest, the most advanced etc. There are people who look good on the outside but are just empty on the inside. Good packaging, no substance.
These new and swanky buildings may be THE place to be for many and is probably where all the luxurious brands congregate but all in all, it is cold and distant. These buildings are like strangers. The older buildings have a certain flavour and warmth to it. They are rich in culture and history. It is unpretentious and non-judgmental. It almost feels like, family.
Do not take my word as gospel truth though. You gotta feel it to understand. I am just voicing out my opinions like those 'concerned members of the public'. Well I guess, the people and the buildings are actually pretty much similar than what most people would think. Gone are the days when values, morals and substance actually matters.
